The evening that should feel arranged

A milestone birthday or an anniversary is an evening someone has planned for months, and the transport is the part that either disappears into the plan or spoils it: the search for parking outside the restaurant, the argument about who drives, the app that is not there at eleven. A chauffeured car removes all three. The stretch limousine turns the drive into part of the celebration; the Premium Sedan turns it into the quiet, dignified thing an anniversary dinner wants; either way the car is outside the door at the agreed minute and the chauffeur has not had a drink.

We do these evenings in every city on this site, and the shape is always the same: the pickup, the dinner, sometimes the show or the lookout, the ride home - priced as one evening on an hourly booking, or as two transfers when it is simply there and back.

Birthdays

The thirtieth, the fortieth, the fiftieth: the friends' night out in a stretch limousine with the bar console and the music, the dinner at the restaurant that took two months to book, the bar afterwards, everyone home. The stretch takes eight; a larger group books a Sprinter alongside or instead. The sixteenth - a Sweet Sixteen in a stretch with the parents' rules attached, no alcohol, the prom page's standard - and the eightieth, a Premium Sedan for the grandparents to the family dinner with the chauffeur's arm at the door.

Surprises work: the chauffeur arrives at the door 'for a work event', the friends are already in the car, and the destination is a secret until the door opens. Tell the desk it is a surprise and the confirmation goes to the organiser only.

Anniversaries

The first, the tenth, the twenty-fifth, the fiftieth. The Premium Sedan is the anniversary car - the S-Class, the quiet cabin, the chauffeur who opens the door and says nothing - and the evening is the restaurant where it began, or the hotel where the wedding was, and the drive past the old house on the way home. Couples who booked our stretch limousine for their wedding come back for the anniversary and ask for the same chauffeur, and when we can, they get him. The wedding page is where many of these bookings began.

Proposals

A proposal is a plan with a single point of failure, and the transport is the part that must not fail. The chauffeur is in on it: the pickup as an ordinary dinner, the detour to the lookout - Mount Royal in Montreal, the Toronto Islands ferry or the Bluffs in Toronto, Cypress lookout above Vancouver, Signal Hill in St. John's, the Citadel in Halifax, the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City - the champagne already in the car, and the photographer, if there is one, told where the car will stop. The desk has done this many times and keeps the secret.

Retirements, promotions and the small milestones

The retirement dinner the company hosts, with a Premium Sedan for the retiree and spouse on the corporate account; the promotion the team celebrates; the citizenship ceremony and the dinner after; the graduation the prom page covers; the reunion of friends who have not been in one car for thirty years. The vehicles and the evening are the same; the reason is what the chauffeur is told so the car is decorated or not, the champagne is there or not, the music is on or off.

The vehicles, matched to the evening

The stretch limousine for the group and the occasion - eight seats, the bar, the fibre-optic ceiling, the photographs outside the restaurant. The Premium Sedan for the couple. The Luxury SUV for six friends or three generations. The Executive Sprinter for the birthday that became a party of fourteen. The chauffeur decorates on request - a banner, balloons, the couple's names on the door - and the champagne on ice is included in the stretch where provincial law allows alcohol in a licensed, partitioned limousine and everyone is of age; the chauffeur will confirm the rule for the province.

Dinner, the show and the lookout

The evening usually has three parts and the chauffeur plans the gaps: the restaurant's reservation time, the theatre's curtain if there is one, the lookout on the way home. Every city has its restaurants - Toronto's Yorkville and King West, Montreal's Old Port and the Plateau, Vancouver's Gastown and Yaletown, Calgary's 17th Avenue, Ottawa's ByWard Market - and its lookouts, and a chauffeur who knows both makes the evening feel like it was arranged by someone who cared, which it was. The concerts and nightlife page covers the show; the hourly page covers how a multi-stop evening is priced.

What it costs

A there-and-back for a couple is two fixed fares by address, and a sedan for a Saturday evening can usually be booked the same day. A stretch limousine evening is priced by the hour with a minimum that covers the usual span, and a Saturday in the summer or the December party season should be booked weeks ahead. Decoration and the champagne in the stretch are inside the fare; gratuity is not added; the fare is confirmed in writing before the evening so the organiser knows the number.

Gifting the evening

Many of these bookings are gifts: the children booking the parents' anniversary dinner and the car, the friends booking the birthday limousine, the company booking the retiree's evening. Book it in your name, put the guest's name and mobile on the reservation so the chauffeur's text reaches them, and tell the desk whether it is a surprise. The confirmation can be printed as a card.

Three evenings, worked through

A fortieth in Toronto: eight friends, a stretch limousine at the first house at 6, three more houses, the restaurant on King West at 7:15 with the car in the photographs, the bar on Ossington at 10, home in reverse order by 1. Booked hourly; the chauffeur has the addresses and the champagne is on ice where Ontario's rules for a licensed limousine allow it.

A golden anniversary in Vancouver: the grandparents collected from Kerrisdale in a Premium Sedan at 5:30, the family dinner at a Yaletown restaurant, the drive along the seawall and past the old house in Dunbar on the way home. Two transfers, the chauffeur's arm at the door, the fare confirmed to the daughter who booked it as a gift.

A proposal in Montreal: a Premium Sedan collects the couple 'for dinner', the restaurant in the Plateau, and on the way home the unannounced turn up Mount Royal to the Kondiaronk lookout, where the photographer the desk was told about is already waiting and the champagne is in the door. The chauffeur steps out of frame.

Where the evening goes: lookouts and drives

Every city has a place the chauffeur will take you after dinner without being asked. Toronto: the Polson Pier view of the skyline, or the Bluffs. Montreal: Mount Royal's Kondiaronk lookout. Vancouver: Cypress lookout above the city, or the Stanley Park seawall at night. Calgary: Scotsman's Hill over the Stampede grounds and the towers. Edmonton: the river valley from the Muttart. Ottawa: Nepean Point behind the gallery. Halifax: Citadel Hill, or the Dartmouth side of the harbour. Quebec City: the Dufferin Terrace and the Plains. Winnipeg: the Forks. Destination Canada's city guides list them for the visitor; the chauffeur knows the parking.

Restaurants and the reservation

The chauffeur's plan is built around the reservation time and the venue's door, and the good restaurants in every city have a curb the chauffeur knows: the valet forecourt at the hotel restaurants, the side street for the King West rooms, the boulevard for Old Montreal. Tell the desk the restaurant and the time; the pickup is worked backwards from it with the traffic at that hour, and the car is outside when the bill is paid. A restaurant that took months to book deserves an arrival that is not a search for parking.

Sweet Sixteens and the younger milestones

A sixteenth birthday in a stretch limousine is a rite of passage and the parents' rules apply: no alcohol for anyone under the provincial drinking age, which for a sixteenth means none; the route listed and no unlisted stops; the booking parent's number on the chauffeur's phone. The prom page sets out the standard in full, and it is the same one. The stretch takes eight; the Sprinter fourteen; the photographs on the driveway are the point.

Anniversaries the company hosts

A firm marking a partner's twenty-five years, a company's fiftieth anniversary dinner, a founder's retirement: the corporate account books the honouree's Premium Sedan and the guests' cars, and the meet-and-greet for the family flown in for it. The invoice line carries the occasion, which is the kind of detail finance departments quietly appreciate.

Booking it

For a couple's evening, the engine: pickup, restaurant, home, the fixed fares shown in seconds. For a stretch limousine, a surprise or a proposal, the desk through the contact page, so the plan is built by a person who keeps secrets and the confirmation goes only where it should.

The provincial rule on champagne, in one paragraph

Alcohol in a moving vehicle is regulated province by province and the rule that matters here is the exception for a licensed limousine with a partition between the chauffeur and the passengers. Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and most other provinces allow passengers of legal age to drink in such a vehicle; a few do not, and the rule changes at the border between them. The chauffeur knows the rule for the province the evening is in and will say so at booking; in a sedan, an SUV or a Sprinter the answer is no everywhere. The provincial liquor authorities publish the rules - Ontario's AGCO is the usual reference in the country's largest market - and a chauffeur who says no is protecting the licence that lets the stretch carry champagne at all.

The evening in a smaller city

A fortieth in Regina or Saskatoon, an anniversary in Kelowna or Victoria, a proposal in London or Kitchener-Waterloo: the same vehicles, the same plan, and the pre-booked car is not a luxury after 11 pm in a city where the apps have gone home. The stretch limousines in the smaller cities are fewer and book out faster; the desk knows which weekends are spoken for.

Photographs

The stretch limousine on the driveway, the couple at the restaurant door, the champagne in the cabin: the chauffeur takes the photograph on your phone if asked, positions the car where it looks best, and steps out of frame. A photographer booked for a proposal gets the chauffeur's mobile and the exact stopping point at the lookout. The pictures are half the reason people book the stretch; the chauffeurs know it.

FAQ

Birthdays & anniversaries: questions answered

Can the chauffeur keep a proposal or a surprise secret?

Yes. Tell the desk at booking; the confirmation goes to the organiser only and the chauffeur plays the part - the ordinary dinner pickup, the unannounced detour to the lookout, the champagne already in the car.

Is champagne included in the stretch limousine?

Where provincial law allows alcohol in a licensed, partitioned limousine and everyone is of age, champagne on ice is inside the fare; the chauffeur confirms the rule for your province.

Can you decorate the car?

Yes - a banner, balloons, the couple's names on the door, ribbons. Tell the desk the colours and the occasion.

How many people fit in a stretch limousine?

Eight. For a larger birthday group a Sprinter takes fourteen, or a stretch and an SUV travel together.

Can I book the evening as a gift for someone else?

Yes. Book in your name, put the guest's name and mobile on the reservation, and say whether it is a surprise; the confirmation can be printed as a card.

How far ahead should we book a stretch for a Saturday?

Weeks ahead in summer and December in the big cities; a sedan for a couple can usually be booked the same day.
