The northern gateway, a long way from town

Edmonton International in Leduc County is the country's fifth-busiest airport and the furthest of any Canadian gateway from its city - twenty-seven kilometres south of downtown, thirty minutes off-peak up the QE2 and Gateway Boulevard - and its ground transportation is organised around that distance: a single terminal, a taxi rank, ride-app zones, an express bus, no rail link, and the pre-arranged commercial curb where a chauffeur booked in advance waits with your name on a phone, a fixed fare that is honest about the kilometres, and, from November to March, a car that has been running since the aircraft began its descent. This page is about that last option - where it is, how it works, what it costs to the addresses people book most, and when the taxi is the better choice. The airport transfers page covers the service in general; the Edmonton page covers the city.

The terminal, and how the pickup works

YEG is a single terminal with the domestic and international gates on one concourse: the CBSA hall for the international arrivals - the sun destinations, Europe's seasonal flights, the Asian connections - with kiosks and officers, then the international carousels; the domestic carousels for the Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and northern flights and for the US arrivals that pre-cleared in the United States; and one arrivals level with a short walk from any carousel to the doors. The pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb is on the arrivals level outside, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone, and - because the airport permits it at the pre-arranged area and the winter demands it - the chauffeur keeps the car running while waiting. The chauffeur's text names the door and the curb; with meet and greet added, the chauffeur is inside the hall with a name board. Sixty minutes of waiting are included from landing on an international arrival, thirty on a domestic or US one. The airport publishes the layout at flyeia.com.

Departures

The chauffeur is at your door at the time the engine suggests: three hours for international, two for domestic and US, plus the thirty-minute drive at that hour, plus a margin for a ground blizzard on the QE2 or the Whitemud's rush. The drop is at the departures curb by the airline's check-in.

Figures are approximate; the engine prices the exact address. There are no road tolls in Alberta; the Parks Canada entry pass for Jasper is added at cost and shown at booking.

The vehicle for YEG

The luggage and the season decide it: an Executive Sedan takes three passengers with two large cases and two carry-ons; a family, the skis for Jasper's Marmot Basin or the gear for a heartland site visit need the Luxury SUV, which also has the ride height for the QE2 in January; a crew for the industrial heartland or a tournament team is cheaper per seat in an Executive Sprinter. Winter tyres and block heaters are on every vehicle from October. The fleet page has the capacities.

YEG's other options, honestly

The taxi rank is a licensed, metered service and the twenty-seven kilometres make it a real fare; the queue at midnight in January is the problem, and there is no flight tracking. The express bus to downtown runs a schedule and is the cheap option for a single traveller with a carry-on and time. The ride-app zone is on the airport with the fare estimated and subject to surge, and on a January night the apps can show no cars at the airport for twenty minutes. There is no rail link. The pre-arranged chauffeur is the option for the group, the luggage, the heartland, Jasper, the fixed time, the company account and every night the temperature is below minus twenty; the comparison page sets them side by side.

Meet and greet at YEG

Curbside pickup at the pre-arranged area is included. Meet and greet - the chauffeur inside the hall with a name board - is the add-on, and at YEG it is the right choice for a first arrival in the city, an elderly parent, an unaccompanied minor, a client the company is hosting, or a family landing from a sun destination in January into a temperature they have forgotten.

The industrial heartland and the oil-sands traffic

Nisku and Leduc beside the airport are the energy-services industry's yard, and the corporate account's most-booked YEG transfer is a ten-minute run from the terminal to a Nisku office followed by an hourly chauffeur for the day across the heartland. Fort McMurray is four hundred and seventy kilometres north on Highway 63 and most oil-sands travellers fly it from YEG, booking the Edmonton transfer at each end; the desk quotes the drive as a fixed fare with the chauffeur's overnight for the traveller who would rather not fly.

Jasper and the mountain road

Jasper is four hours west on the Yellowhead Highway, the Parks Canada pass is checked at the gate and the chauffeur has it, and the city-to-city service prices the transfer as one fixed fare with the return built in; the Luxury SUV with the skis in the back for Marmot Basin is the winter's booking and the Icefields Parkway to Banff the summer's. Alberta 511 is read before every departure and the Yellowhead's winter closures are the chauffeur's business. The Calgary corridor on the QE2 - three hours - is the weekly run for anyone who deals with the other city.

Delays, diversions and the winter

The flight number is watched from departure. Edmonton's winter is long and honest: from November to March the roads are snow-packed, a January cold snap holds at minus thirty for a week, and the ground blizzards on the QE2 close the Calgary corridor a few days a season; fog diverts the occasional aircraft to Calgary, which brings a call from dispatch. The engine's suggested pickup for a winter departure adds the margin, and the car is warm at the curb before you reach it.

Airport hotels and the early flight

The Renaissance inside the terminal - a walk from the check-in - and the hotels along the airport road in Leduc five minutes away are the answer to the 6 am departure and the midnight arrival; the travel desk books the room.

Corporate accounts at YEG

The provincial government, the University of Alberta and its hospital, the energy-services companies in Nisku and the heartland and the engineering firms set the account's profiles with the downtown hotel or the Nisku office as the default drop, the heartland site day as a standing hourly plan, meet and greet for guests and one monthly invoice. The corporate page covers the setup.

Two things YEG passengers ask the desk most

Is the car really warm at the curb? Yes; the airport permits a pre-arranged vehicle to keep its engine running at the commercial curb and the chauffeurs use the permission, and a block heater has kept the engine warm between bookings; the walk from the doors to a warm car is thirty seconds at minus thirty. Can we go straight to a heartland site from the aircraft? Yes; the Luxury SUV waits at the curb, Nisku is ten minutes, Fort Saskatchewan forty-five, and the day across the heartland is an hourly booking with the site visits as the stops. A third, asked every spring: the Oilers' playoff nights sell every chauffeured car in the city by noon.

The Anthony Henday and the Whitemud

The Anthony Henday ring road is the route from the airport to Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove and West Edmonton Mall and it is fast except at its interchanges at 5 pm; the Whitemud crosses the south of the city to the university and the west end; Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail carry the airport traffic into downtown and Old Strathcona. The chauffeur's choice is made on Alberta 511 and the hour, and the fare is the same whichever road is used.

The northern flights

YEG is the gateway to the North: the flights to Yellowknife, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Fort St. John and the mine sites' charters leave from its domestic gates, and the transfer from a downtown hotel to the 6 am northern flight is a booking the corporate accounts make weekly. The provinces page covers the territories the flights go to, and the Northwest Territories page the Yellowknife end.

Sun destinations and the January arrival

YEG's winter charters to Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic land families back into a temperature they have forgotten in a week away, and the international hall's sixty included minutes cover the CBSA queue on a Saturday's three charter arrivals at once. The Luxury SUV waits at the curb, running; the chauffeur has the car at a temperature the children will not complain about; and the twenty-seven kilometres home to Sherwood Park or St. Albert are the fare on the confirmation from before the holiday, whatever the app is showing at the airport that night. A booster seat noted at booking is fitted before the family reaches the curb, and the Alberta page carries the province's child-restraint rules for the parent who wants to check them.

Edmonton YEG: questions answered

Where does the chauffeur meet me at Edmonton airport?
