The closest airport to its downtown

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International is eight kilometres from Portage and Main, which makes it the closest major airport to its downtown in Canada, and its ground transportation is organised around a single terminal opened in 2011: a taxi rank, ride-app zones, a city bus, and the pre-arranged commercial curb where a chauffeur booked in advance waits with your name on a phone, a fixed fare on the confirmation and, from November to March, an engine that has been running since the aircraft began its descent. This page is about that last option - where it is, how it works, what it costs to the addresses people book most, and when the taxi is the better choice. The airport transfers page covers the service in general; the Winnipeg page covers the city.

The terminal, and how the pickup works

YWG is a single terminal with the domestic and international gates on one concourse: the CBSA hall for the international arrivals - the sun destinations and the US flights that did not pre-clear - with kiosks and officers, then the international carousels; the domestic carousels for the Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and northern flights and the pre-cleared US arrivals; and one arrivals level with a short walk from any carousel to the doors. The pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb is on the arrivals level outside, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone, and the airport permits a pre-arranged vehicle to keep its engine running there, which the chauffeurs do in winter. The chauffeur's text names the door and the curb; with meet and greet added, the chauffeur is inside the hall with a name board. Sixty minutes of waiting are included from landing on an international arrival, thirty on a domestic or US one. The Winnipeg Airports Authority publishes the layout at waa.ca.

Departures

The chauffeur is at your door at the time the engine suggests: three hours for international, two for domestic and US, plus the fifteen-minute drive at that hour, plus a margin for a blizzard on Route 90. The drop is at the departures curb by the airline's check-in. For the 6 am Calgary or Toronto flight in January the chauffeur is at a River Heights door at 4:15 with the car warm, which is the booking this airport is known for.

Figures are approximate; the engine prices the exact address. There are no road tolls in Manitoba.

The vehicle for YWG

The luggage and the season decide it: an Executive Sedan takes three passengers with two large cases and two carry-ons; a family from a sun destination in January needs the Luxury SUV, which also has the ride height for the drifted side streets; a hockey team for a tournament or a wedding party for a social is cheaper per seat in an Executive Sprinter. Winter tyres and block heaters are on every vehicle from October. The fleet page has the capacities.

YWG's other options, honestly

The taxi rank is a licensed, metered service and, at eight kilometres, a modest fare on a July afternoon; the problem is the January night when the rank has two cars and a queue of thirty, and there is no flight tracking. The city bus runs to downtown and is the cheap option for a single traveller with a carry-on and time. The ride-app zone is on the airport with the fare estimated and subject to surge, and on a cold night the apps can show nothing. The pre-arranged chauffeur is the option for the group, the luggage, the fixed time, the company account and every night below minus twenty; the comparison page sets them side by side.

Meet and greet at YWG

Curbside pickup at the pre-arranged area is included. Meet and greet - the chauffeur inside the hall with a name board - is the add-on, and at YWG it is the right choice for a first arrival in the city, an elderly parent, an unaccompanied minor, a client the company is hosting, or a family landing from a sun destination into a January they have forgotten.

The Jets, the Bombers and the busy nights

A Jets playoff run turns Canada Life Centre's whiteout into the city's biggest fortnight and every chauffeured car is booked by noon on a game day; a traveller landing at 5 pm on a game night books the transfer from the airport to the arena's hotel forecourts with the game on the plan. IG Field's Bombers Sundays, the Grey Cup years and Folklorama's August pavilions fill the rest; the sporting events page covers the arrangement and the Winnipeg page the calendar.

Delays, diversions and the winter

The flight number is watched from departure. Winnipeg's winter is the Prairie's at its coldest: a January that holds below minus thirty for a week, a wind across the plain that makes it worse, and the occasional blizzard that closes the airport for an afternoon; a diversion to Regina or Thunder Bay brings a call from dispatch. The engine's suggested pickup for a winter departure adds the margin; Manitoba 511 is what dispatch reads, and the car is warm at the curb before you reach it.

Airport hotels and the early flight

The Grand and the Four Points beside the terminal and the hotels along Wellington Avenue five minutes away are the answer to the 6 am departure and the midnight arrival; the travel desk books the room.

Corporate accounts at YWG

The transport and logistics companies that make the city the country's freight crossroads, the insurers on Portage, the aerospace firms beside the airport, the provincial government and the university set the account's profiles with the Fairmont or the Fort Garry as the default drop, meet and greet for guests and one monthly invoice. The corporate page covers the setup.

Two things YWG passengers ask the desk most

Is a chauffeur worth it for eight kilometres? On a July afternoon, perhaps not; at 4:30 am in January for the 6 am flight, with the rank short of cars and the app empty, it is the only car that will be there and the fare is one of the lowest on this site. Can the car take us straight to the Folk Festival at Birds Hill? Yes; the festival's shuttle lot is an hour from the terminal and a Sprinter for the group is a fixed fare with the return built in. A third, asked every spring: a Jets playoff night sells every chauffeured car by noon.

A hockey-tournament weekend, worked through

A minor-hockey team from Thunder Bay landing at YWG on a Friday at 4 pm in February for a weekend tournament at the Seven Oaks arenas: fourteen players, six parents, twenty equipment bags. An Executive Sprinter and two Luxury SUVs were booked with the flight number; the aircraft is on time and the domestic bags - the hockey bags are the slow part - take thirty minutes. At 4:35 the group is at the pre-arranged curb where the three vehicles have been running since the descent, the bags go in the Sprinter's compartment and the SUVs' bays, and the hotel on Pembina is reached by 5:10. The Sprinter is held for the weekend for the rink runs at a day rate on the hourly chauffeur service, the team's manager has one invoice, and on Sunday the same three vehicles collect at the hotel for the 6 pm flight. The sporting events page covers the team weekend.

Route 90 and the winter roads

Route 90 - Kenaston Boulevard - runs from the airport's edge south past River Heights and Tuxedo to the university and IG Field, and Wellington Avenue runs east to Portage and downtown; both are wide, both are quick, and both are ice from December to March. Manitoba 511 is what dispatch reads for the highways out of the city - Highway 8 to Gimli, the Trans-Canada to Brandon, Highway 75 to Emerson - and the ground blizzards on the Trans-Canada close it a few days a season; a trip that cannot go is cancelled without charge.

The northern flights

YWG is the gateway to the northern communities - Churchill, Thompson, the Nunavut flights - and the transfer from a downtown hotel to a 7 am northern departure is a booking the corporate accounts of the mining companies, the health authorities and the government make weekly; the Manitoba page covers the province's north and the Nunavut page the far end.

FAQ

Winnipeg YWG: questions answered

Where does the chauffeur meet me at Winnipeg airport?

At the pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb on the arrivals level, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone and texted to you with the plate before landing, with the engine running and the car warm in winter. With meet and greet added, inside the hall with a name board.

How long will the chauffeur wait at YWG?

Sixty minutes from landing on an international arrival and thirty on a domestic or US pre-cleared one, before any waiting charge applies.

How much is a limo from Winnipeg airport to downtown?

A fixed fare by vehicle class for your exact address, shown by the engine in seconds; at eight kilometres the Executive Sedan fare is one of the lowest airport fares on this site. No surge on a playoff night, no meter, no gratuity added.

Is the car really warm at minus thirty?

Yes - the airport permits a pre-arranged vehicle to keep its engine running at the commercial curb, the chauffeurs use it, and a block heater has kept the engine warm between bookings.

Do you drive from YWG to Gimli, Brandon or Grand Forks?

Yes - Gimli in an hour, Brandon in two, and Grand Forks in two and a half on the cross-border service via Emerson; every passenger crossing needs a passport or NEXUS card.

Can you get from the airport to Canada Life Centre on a Jets night?

Yes - the arena's hotel forecourts on Portage are the pre-arranged pickup inside the closures, and a game night should be booked the day the schedule is announced.

Do you pick up at the airport hotels?

Yes - the Grand and the Four Points beside the terminal and the Wellington Avenue hotels have forecourts the chauffeurs know, and the transfer to the terminal is a short fixed fare.

Do you serve Headingley, Oak Bluff and Steinbach?

Yes - every address in the capital region prices on the engine at the same standard, and Steinbach is an hour south-east on Highway 12.

Can you take a hockey team and its equipment from the airport?

Yes - an Executive Sprinter with the bags in the compartment plus SUVs for the parents, met at the curb and held for the tournament weekend at a day rate, on one invoice to the team.

Do you do the 7 am northern flights?

Yes - the transfer from a downtown hotel to a Churchill, Thompson or Nunavut departure is a weekly corporate booking, and the car is at the door at 5 am in any weather.
