The capital's airport, close to town

Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International is thirteen kilometres south of Parliament Hill, twenty minutes up the Airport Parkway, and its ground transportation is organised around a single terminal: a taxi rank, ride-app zones, the light-rail extension that now reaches the airport, and the pre-arranged commercial curb where a chauffeur booked in advance waits with your name on a phone and a fixed fare on the confirmation. This page is about that last option - where it is, how it works, what it costs to the addresses people book most, including the Kanata tech park and the Quebec side, and when the train is the better choice. The airport transfers page covers the service in general; the Ottawa page covers the capital.

The terminal, and how the pickup works

YOW is a single terminal with the domestic, international and US pre-clearance gates on one concourse: the CBSA hall for the international arrivals - the sun destinations, London, Frankfurt's seasonal flights - with kiosks and officers, then the international carousels; the domestic carousels for the Toronto, Montreal and western flights and for the US arrivals that pre-cleared in the United States; and one arrivals level with a short walk from any carousel to the doors. The pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb is on the arrivals level outside, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone; the chauffeur's text names the door and the curb, in French or English as you booked. With meet and greet added, the chauffeur is inside the hall with a name board. Sixty minutes of waiting are included from landing on an international arrival, thirty on a domestic or US one. The airport authority publishes the layout at yow.ca.

Departures

The chauffeur is at your door at the time the engine suggests: three hours for international, two for domestic and US, plus the twenty-minute drive at that hour, plus a margin for the Queensway at 8 am or a January freezing-rain morning. The drop is at the departures curb by the airline's check-in.

The Hill, the ministries and the session week

When the House sits, Monday morning's and Thursday evening's flights carry members, staff, lobbyists and consultants, and the corporate account's YOW transfer with the Château Laurier or a department tower as the default drop is the capital's most-booked booking; the hourly chauffeur for the day between the Hill, the towers on Slater and Queen and the embassies on Sussex is the follow-on. The Parliamentary Protective Service's rule for pre-arranged cars at the Wellington Street curb is on the desk's file, and the invoice meets the federal travel directive's receipt requirements.

Kanata and the arena

Kanata's tech park is thirty kilometres from the terminal around the city's south and west, and the visiting engineer's transfer to the Brookstreet Hotel is a fixed fare priced by the distance; the Canadian Tire Centre beside the park is the sporting events page's Ottawa entry, and a Senators game from the airport for the traveller who lands at 5 pm on a game night is a booking the desk makes regularly.

The Quebec side

Gatineau's department towers, the Canadian Museum of History, the casino at Lac-Leamy and the Gatineau Park's hills are across the river by five bridges, and the chauffeur - bilingual as standard - chooses the bridge by the hour; a Chelsea or a park address is forty minutes from the terminal and prices by the distance. The Quebec page covers the winter roads on that side.

The vehicle for YOW

The luggage decides it: an Executive Sedan takes three passengers with two large cases and two carry-ons; a family from a sun destination with four cases needs the Luxury SUV; a government delegation or a conference group is cheaper per seat in an Executive Sprinter. Winter tyres are on every vehicle from November. The fleet page has the capacities.

YOW's other options, honestly

The light rail now reaches the airport and for a single traveller with a carry-on bound for a downtown hotel near a station it is cheap and, with the transfer at Bayview, reasonable; the walk from the station with luggage and the transfer are the costs. The taxi rank is a licensed, metered service and a fair one for a single traveller downtown, with a queue on the Thursday-evening wave and no flight tracking. The ride-app zone is on the airport with the fare estimated and subject to surge on the session-week waves. The pre-arranged chauffeur is the option for the group, the luggage, Kanata, Orléans, the Quebec side, the fixed time and the government account; the comparison page sets them side by side.

Meet and greet at YOW

Curbside pickup at the pre-arranged area is included. Meet and greet - the chauffeur inside the hall with a name board - is the add-on, and at YOW it is the right choice for a visiting delegation, a first arrival in the capital, an elderly parent, an unaccompanied minor or a guest the embassy is hosting; a bilingual name board is standard.

Canada Day, Bluesfest and the busy weeks

Canada Day's arrival wave on June 30 and the departures on July 2, Bluesfest's ten days in July, Winterlude's February weekends and the return of Parliament in September fill the airport's waves and the city's cars; the Canada Day evening's pickup point outside the downtown closures is on the confirmation. The Ottawa page has the calendar and the nights out page the approach.

Delays, diversions and the winter

The flight number is watched from departure. Ottawa's winter is long and well-handled, but the January freezing rain that glazes the Queensway and the Airport Parkway is the morning the chauffeur's winter tyres and patience matter, and a diversion to Montreal in an ice storm brings a call from dispatch and, where the 417 allows, a chauffeur at Trudeau. The engine's suggested pickup for a winter departure adds the margin; Ontario 511 is what dispatch reads.

Airport hotels and the early flight

The Hilton Garden Inn beside the terminal and the hotels along the Airport Parkway and in the Hunt Club area five minutes away are the answer to the 6 am departure and the midnight arrival; the travel desk books the room.

The corridor from the airport

Montreal in two hours on the 417 and the 40, Toronto in four and a half on the 416 and the 401, Kingston and the Thousand Islands in two, Mont-Tremblant in two for the ski weekend: all city-to-city fixed fares with the return built in, and the chauffeur meets the aircraft at YOW's curb with the drive ahead already planned.

Two things YOW passengers ask the desk most

Can the chauffeur drop me on Parliament Hill? At the Wellington Street curb the Protective Service allows for pre-arranged cars, a minute's walk from the gate. Is Kanata really that far from the airport? Thirty kilometres around the city's south and west, thirty minutes off-peak and fifty at 5 pm; the fixed fare is honest about it. A third, asked every September: the week Parliament returns is the year's busiest at the curb, and the corporate accounts reserve it in August.

A session-week Monday, worked through

The 7 am Porter from Billy Bishop lands at 8:05 with a lobbyist, an association director and a consultant who do not know each other, each with a carry-on and each with a 9:30 on the Hill or in a tower on Slater. Three Executive Sedans were booked on three corporate accounts with the same flight number; the aircraft is on time and the three chauffeurs are at the pre-arranged curb by 8:10, plates texted. No checked bags; by 8:25 all three are on the Airport Parkway, and by 8:45 the lobbyist is at the Wellington Street curb, the director at the Château Laurier for a breakfast and the consultant on Slater. Three fixed fares, three invoice lines with three client codes, and none of the three stood in the taxi queue that Monday's four arrivals from Toronto had made. The same three fly home on Thursday's 5:30 and the chauffeurs collect from the towers at 4:15, because the engine knows the Queensway at that hour.

The Trillium Line, in one paragraph

The light rail's extension to the airport gives Ottawa what Toronto and Vancouver have and Calgary, Edmonton and Halifax do not: a train from the terminal to the city. It reaches downtown with a transfer at Bayview and it is the honest choice for a single traveller with a carry-on and a hotel near a station; the pre-arranged chauffeur is the choice for everyone with luggage, a group, a Kanata or Orléans address, a Gatineau address, a fixed time or an account, and the OC Transpo timetable is the place to check the train.

The embassies and the visiting delegation

Ottawa's embassies along Sussex Drive and in Rockcliffe and Sandy Hill host ministers, trade delegations and cultural visitors through YOW every week, and the delegation booking - meet and greet at the curb with a bilingual name board, a Premium Sedan for the minister and a Sprinter for the party, the embassy or the Château as the drop, the hourly chauffeur for the day of meetings - is built with the desk and invoiced to the mission. The Parliamentary Protective Service's rules for pre-arranged cars at the Hill are on file, and the chauffeurs have driven them.

FAQ

Ottawa YOW: questions answered

Where does the chauffeur meet me at Ottawa airport?

At the pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb on the arrivals level, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone and texted to you with the plate before landing, in French or English as you booked. With meet and greet added, inside the hall with a name board.

How long will the chauffeur wait at YOW?

Sixty minutes from landing on an international arrival and thirty on a domestic or US pre-cleared one, before any waiting charge applies.

How much is a limo from Ottawa airport to Parliament Hill?

A fixed fare by vehicle class for your exact address, shown by the engine in seconds; the Executive Sedan is the most-booked class for the thirteen-kilometre run and it is one of the lowest airport fares on this site. No surge, no meter, no gratuity added.

Is the light rail better than a chauffeur?

For one traveller with a carry-on bound for a hotel near a station, often yes. For a group, luggage, Kanata, Orléans, the Quebec side, a fixed time or a government account, the chauffeur.

Do you drive from YOW to Kanata and the Canadian Tire Centre?

Yes - about thirty kilometres around the city's south and west, a fixed fare priced by the distance; a Senators game from the airport on a game night is a regular booking.

Do you serve Gatineau from the airport?

Yes - the Portage, Hull, Lac-Leamy and the Gatineau Park price on the engine, with a bilingual chauffeur as standard and the bridge chosen by the hour.

Can a government delegation book on account?

Yes - a corporate account with meet and greet at YOW, sedans or a Sprinter for the delegation, and an itemised monthly invoice that meets the federal travel directive's receipt requirements.

Do you drive from YOW to Montreal or Toronto?

Yes - Montreal in two hours and Toronto in four and a half, as fixed fares with the return built in, with the chauffeur meeting the aircraft at the curb.
