The mountain gateway's airport

Calgary International in the city's north-east is the country's fourth-busiest airport, WestJet's home and the gateway to Banff, and its ground transportation is organised around two connected terminals - domestic and international - a taxi rank at each, ride-app zones, no rail link, and the pre-arranged commercial curb where a chauffeur booked in advance waits with your name on a phone, a fixed fare on the confirmation and, in ski season, room for the skis. This page is about that last option - where it is at each terminal, how it works, what it costs to the addresses people book most and to the mountains, and when the taxi is the better choice. The airport transfers page covers the service in general; the Calgary page covers the city.

The domestic terminal and the international terminal

The domestic terminal - concourses A, B and C - handles the Canadian flights: WestJet's and Air Canada's Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton and the rest. The international terminal - concourses D and E, opened in 2016 - handles the overseas flights and the US pre-clearance departures; international arrivals come through its CBSA hall with kiosks and officers, then the international carousels, then the doors into its arrivals area; US arrivals, pre-cleared in the United States, arrive as domestic flights at the domestic terminal. The two terminals are connected but a long walk apart - the YYC Link people-mover runs between them airside - and the drive between the two curbs is five minutes.

The pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb is on the arrivals level of each terminal, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone; the chauffeur's text names the terminal, the door and the curb. With meet and greet added, the chauffeur is inside the hall at the customs exit or the domestic carousels with a name board. Sixty minutes of waiting are included from landing on an international arrival, thirty on a domestic or US one. The Calgary Airport Authority publishes the commercial curb map at yyc.com.

Departures

The chauffeur is at your door at the time the engine suggests: three hours for international, two for domestic and US, plus the drive at that hour down the Deerfoot, plus a margin for a chinook morning's ice or the Stampede week's traffic. The drop is at the departures curb of the right terminal by the airline's check-in.

Figures are approximate; the engine prices the exact address. There are no road tolls in Alberta; the Parks Canada entry pass for Banff and Lake Louise is added at cost and shown at booking.

Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise from the airport

The Trans-Canada west from the airport passes the city's edge in twenty minutes, Cochrane's turnoff in thirty, Canmore in seventy and the Banff park gate in eighty, where the chauffeur has the pass; Banff townsite is ninety minutes on a clear day, Lake Louise forty beyond it, and both are priced as single fixed fares with the return built in on the city-to-city service. The Luxury SUV with the skis or the golf bags in the back is the vehicle; a Sprinter takes a ski group of fourteen. Alberta 511 and Parks Canada's road reports are read before every mountain departure, a chinook's ice and a December whiteout each add time, and the return to YYC on the Sunday with the flight number on the booking is where the tracking earns its keep. Christmas week and the February school break are booked in October.

The vehicle for YYC

The luggage and the season decide it: an Executive Sedan takes three passengers with two large cases and two carry-ons; skis, golf bags and a family of four need the Luxury SUV, which also has the ride height for the Trans-Canada's drifted shoulders in January; a Stampede delegation or a ski group is cheaper per seat in an Executive Sprinter. Winter tyres and block heaters are on every vehicle from October. The fleet page has the capacities.

YYC's other options, honestly

The taxi rank at each terminal is a licensed, metered service and a fair one for a single traveller downtown, with a queue on the evening waves and no flight tracking. The ride-app zones are on the airport with the fare estimated and subject to surge; on a Stampede Friday or a Christmas-week Saturday the surge is severe and the cars are scarce. Transit is a city bus to a train station and not a serious option with luggage. The pre-arranged chauffeur is the option for the group, the luggage, the skis, the fixed time, the company account and the mountains; the comparison page sets them side by side.

Meet and greet at YYC

Curbside pickup at the pre-arranged area is included. Meet and greet - the chauffeur inside the hall with a name board - is the add-on, and at YYC it is the right choice for the international terminal's long walk after an overseas flight, an elderly parent, an unaccompanied minor, a client the company is hosting for Stampede, or a family landing for Banff with a mountain of luggage.

Stampede week and the busy seasons

For ten days from the first Friday of July the airport's arrival waves double and every chauffeured car in the city is booked; the corporate accounts reserve their guests' transfers in the spring and the desk builds the hospitality week as a programme. Christmas week and the February break fill the mountain transfers; the Global Energy Show in June and the Grey Cup years fill the rest. The sporting events page covers Stampede and the Calgary page the calendar.

Delays, diversions and the winter

The flight number is watched from departure. Calgary's winter is the chinook's - a warm morning and a glazed evening - and the ground blizzards on the QE2 that close the Edmonton corridor; fog diverts the occasional aircraft to Edmonton, which brings a call from dispatch and a chauffeur at the new field where the road allows. The engine's suggested pickup for a winter departure adds the margin.

Airport hotels and the early flight

The Marriott inside the airport and the hotels along the Barlow Trail and the Airport Trail five minutes away are the answer to the 6 am departure and the midnight arrival; the travel desk books the room.

Corporate accounts at YYC

The energy sector's head offices, the law and engineering firms that serve them and the tech companies in the East Village set the account's profiles with the downtown tower as the default drop, the Banff client weekend as a standing plan, meet and greet for guests and one monthly invoice. The corporate page covers the setup.

Two things YYC passengers ask the desk most

Domestic or international terminal? The airline's confirmation says which; a US flight arrives at the domestic terminal because it pre-cleared in the United States, and an overseas flight arrives at the international; the two are connected but a long walk apart, and the chauffeur's text names the terminal so nobody walks it with luggage. Can we go straight to Banff from the aircraft? Yes; the Luxury SUV waits at the pre-arranged curb with the ski rack ready and the Parks Canada pass in the glovebox, the Trans-Canada is ninety minutes, and a stop in Canmore for groceries is inside the fare. A third, asked every June: Stampede week's arrival waves double and every chauffeured car is booked by May.

The Deerfoot, Stoney Trail and the quadrants

The Deerfoot Trail is the spine from the airport to downtown and it is slow from 7 to 9 and 4 to 6; Stoney Trail rings the city and is the chauffeur's route to the south-west and south-east quadrants, to Cochrane and to the mountain road when the Deerfoot is crawling. Calgary's addresses carry the quadrant - NW, NE, SW, SE - and a wrong quadrant is a wrong side of the city; the engine reads the full address and the chauffeur reads the quadrant.

Airdrie, Cochrane and Okotoks

The three towns around the city are twenty-five to fifty-five kilometres from the terminal and price by the distance; Airdrie is straight up the QE2, Cochrane is the road to the mountains, Okotoks is the road to the foothills' ranches and the Kananaskis lodges by the back way. The Alberta page covers the province beyond, and the chauffeurs know which town's winter roads are gravel.

Chinooks, in detail

A chinook is a warm, dry wind off the Rockies that can lift Calgary's temperature by twenty degrees in an hour, melt the morning's snow into water and leave the roads glazed by dusk when the wind drops; the Deerfoot's overpasses are the first to ice and the Trans-Canada's shaded stretches west of Cochrane the worst. Dispatch reads Alberta 511 and Environment Canada's chinook forecast, the chauffeurs run winter tyres from October, and a mountain transfer on a chinook evening is driven at a chauffeur's pace with a phone call if it will be late. The fare is the same on a chinook evening as on a clear one.

FAQ

Calgary YYC: questions answered

Where does the chauffeur meet me at Calgary airport?

At the pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb on the arrivals level of the domestic or international terminal, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone and texted to you with the plate before landing. With meet and greet added, inside the hall with a name board.

How long will the chauffeur wait at YYC?

Sixty minutes from landing on an international arrival and thirty on a domestic or US pre-cleared one, before any waiting charge applies.

How long is the drive from Calgary airport to Banff?

About ninety minutes on the Trans-Canada on a clear day, longer in snow or a chinook's ice; one fixed fare with the return built in, in a Luxury SUV with the skis in the back, the Parks Canada pass added at cost.

How much is a limo from YYC to downtown Calgary?

A fixed fare by vehicle class for your exact address, shown by the engine in seconds; the Executive Sedan is the most-booked class for the seventeen-kilometre run. No surge in Stampede week, no meter, no gratuity added.

Is there a train from Calgary airport?

No rail link - a city bus to a train station is the only transit, and not a serious option with luggage. The taxi rank and the pre-arranged chauffeur are the choices; the comparison page sets them side by side.

Can you take a ski group of fourteen to Lake Louise?

Yes - an Executive Sprinter with the bags in the compartment, one fixed fare with the return built in; Christmas week and the February break are booked in October.

Do you fit winter tyres for the mountain road?

Yes - every vehicle runs winter tyres and block heaters from October, and Alberta 511 and Parks Canada's road reports are read before every mountain departure.

Do you pick up at the airport Marriott?

Yes - the Marriott inside the airport and the hotels along the Barlow and Airport trails have forecourts the chauffeurs know, and the transfer to either terminal is a short fixed fare.
