The Atlantic gateway, a long way out

Halifax Stanfield International at Enfield is Atlantic Canada's largest airport and the furthest of any Canadian gateway from its downtown after Edmonton - thirty-five kilometres north of the waterfront on Highway 102, thirty minutes off-peak - and its ground transportation is organised around a single terminal: a taxi rank, ride-app zones, a regional bus, no rail link, and the pre-arranged commercial curb where a chauffeur booked in advance waits with your name on a phone and a fixed fare that is honest about the kilometres. This page is about that last option - where it is, how it works, what it costs to the addresses people book most, and when the taxi is the better choice. The airport transfers page covers the service in general; the Halifax page covers the city.

The terminal, and how the pickup works

YHZ is a single terminal with the domestic, international and US pre-clearance gates on one concourse: the CBSA hall for the international arrivals - London, Reykjavik, the sun destinations, the seasonal European flights - with kiosks and officers, then the international carousels; the domestic carousels for the Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, St. John's and Moncton flights and the pre-cleared US arrivals; and one arrivals level with a short walk from any carousel to the doors. The pre-arranged limousine and car-service curb is on the arrivals level outside, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone; the chauffeur's text names the door and the curb. With meet and greet added, the chauffeur is inside the hall with a name board. Sixty minutes of waiting are included from landing on an international arrival, thirty on a domestic or US one. The airport authority publishes the layout at halifaxstanfield.ca.

Departures

The chauffeur is at your door at the time the engine suggests: three hours for international, two for domestic and US, plus the thirty-minute drive at that hour through the Bedford Highway's merge, plus a margin for a nor'easter or the fog that closes the airport some spring mornings. The drop is at the departures curb by the airline's check-in.

The vehicle for YHZ

The luggage decides it: an Executive Sedan takes three passengers with two large cases and two carry-ons; a family from London or a sun destination with four cases needs the Luxury SUV, which also has the ride height for a snowed-in peninsula street in February; a naval delegation or a conference group is cheaper per seat in an Executive Sprinter. Winter tyres are on every vehicle from November. The fleet page has the capacities.

YHZ's other options, honestly

The taxi rank is a licensed, metered service and the thirty-five kilometres make it a real fare; the queue on a Friday-evening wave and the empty rank at midnight are the problems, and there is no flight tracking. The regional bus runs to downtown on a schedule and is the cheap option for a single traveller with a carry-on and time. The ride-app zone is on the airport with the fare estimated and subject to surge, and at Enfield at midnight the apps can be empty. There is no rail link. The pre-arranged chauffeur is the option for the group, the luggage, Dartmouth, the cruise terminal, the South Shore, the fixed time and the company account; the comparison page sets them side by side.

Meet and greet at YHZ

Curbside pickup at the pre-arranged area is included. Meet and greet - the chauffeur inside the hall with a name board - is the add-on, and at YHZ it is the right choice for a first arrival in the Maritimes, an elderly parent, an unaccompanied minor, a visiting officer the base is hosting, or a cruise passenger joining a ship the next morning.

The cruise terminal and the ships

From May to October the Halifax Seaport's cruise terminal at Pier 21 turns over ships every few days, and the transfer between YHZ and the pier with the ship's schedule and the flight number on the booking is the summer's most-booked run - to a waterfront hotel the night before the ship, or straight to the pier on the morning. The Port of Halifax publishes the schedule, and the turnaround mornings sell every chauffeured car at the airport by 7 am; the ship should be on the booking the week before.

Peggy's Cove, the South Shore and the Valley from the airport

A traveller landing at YHZ for a Nova Scotia week often goes straight to the coast: Peggy's Cove in an hour, Lunenburg in an hour and a half, Chester and Mahone Bay between them, the Annapolis Valley's wineries at Wolfville in an hour. The city-to-city service prices each as a fixed fare with the return built in, the hourly chauffeur covers the day that visits all of them, and the Cabot Trail over three days is quoted with the chauffeur's overnights. Nova Scotia 511 is what dispatch reads for the 103 and the 101.

Delays, diversions and the weather

The flight number is watched from departure. Halifax's weather is the Atlantic's: fog that closes Stanfield on a spring morning and sends aircraft to Moncton, nor'easters that close the 102 for an afternoon, and a hurricane season that occasionally closes everything; a diversion brings a call from dispatch and a chauffeur at the new field where the road allows, and a cancelled flight is a free cancellation on our side. The engine's suggested pickup for a winter departure adds the margin.

Airport hotels and the early flight

The Alt inside the terminal - a walk from the check-in - and the hotels at the airport's exit are the answer to the 6 am Toronto flight and the midnight arrival; the travel desk books the room.

Corporate accounts at YHZ

CFB Halifax and Shearwater, the port and the shipping companies, the universities and the hospitals, the offshore-energy and ocean-technology firms set the account's profiles with the Westin, the Marriott Harbourfront or the base's visitor entrance as the default drop, meet and greet for guests and one monthly invoice. The corporate page covers the setup.

Two things YHZ passengers ask the desk most

Is the airport really that far? Yes - thirty-five kilometres - and the fare is honest about it; the drive is thirty minutes on a clear morning and the car is warm. Can we go straight to the ship? Yes; Pier 21's commercial curb is thirty-two minutes from the terminal and the ship's schedule on the booking sets the timing. A third, asked every autumn: the fall-colour cruise season in September and October is the year's busiest at the pier, and the transfers are booked a month ahead.

A naval delegation's arrival, worked through

A Tuesday 2 pm landing from Ottawa on Air Canada with a visiting admiral, two officers and a civilian official bound for CFB Halifax's headquarters, four cases and a briefcase that does not leave the admiral's hand. A Premium Sedan and an Executive Sedan were booked on the base's corporate account with meet and greet; the aircraft is on time, the chauffeurs are inside the hall with a bilingual board at 2:10, the bags come at 2:25, and the two cars are on the 102 by 2:40 and at the base's visitor entrance - on the desk's file - by 3:15. Two fixed fares, two invoice lines with the visit's code, and the duty-of-care record of chauffeur, plate and timestamps available to the base's travel office on request. The same two cars collect from the Westin on Thursday for the 5 pm return.

The Bedford Highway and the bridges

Highway 102 from the airport runs south through Bedford's merge at the Bedford Highway - the morning's and the evening's slow point - to the Bicentennial Highway and the peninsula; the Macdonald and the MacKay bridges cross the harbour to Dartmouth with tolls the engine shows at booking; the 118 is the Dartmouth and Burnside route from the airport that avoids the peninsula altogether. Nova Scotia 511 is what dispatch reads, and the nor'easter that closes the 102 for an afternoon is the reason the winter airport transfer is booked with a margin.

The Maritimes beyond Halifax

YHZ is the region's gateway and the transfer that continues to Moncton, Fredericton, Charlottetown or Sydney is a city-to-city fixed fare with the return built in - the Confederation Bridge's toll shown at booking for the Island, the chauffeur's overnight quoted for Cape Breton. The Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island pages carry the region's roads and seasons.
