A city of bridges, water and one very good road

Vancouver's geography decides its chauffeur bookings. The airport is on an island in the Fraser delta; downtown is a peninsula reached by bridges; the North Shore is across the harbour on two more; the suburbs stretch east along the river; and the mountains that the city is famous for are a two-hour drive up the Sea-to-Sky. Every transfer here crosses water and most cross a bridge with a rush hour, which is why a fixed fare and a chauffeur who knows the Lions Gate's counterflow are worth having. We run the full service across the Lower Mainland - the YVR transfers that are most of the work, the corporate black car for the port, the film industry and the Asia-Pacific board meetings, the cruise-terminal runs from May to September, and the city-to-city drive to Whistler that is the most beautiful booking on this site.

YVR, and how the pickup works

Vancouver International is on Sea Island in Richmond, thirteen kilometres from downtown and twenty-five minutes off-peak over the Arthur Laing or Oak Street bridges and down Granville, forty in the evening rush. The main terminal has separate domestic and international arrivals halls; US flights arrive at the international side after pre-clearance in the US. The pre-arranged limousine curb is on the arrivals level, signed separately from the taxi rank and the ride-app zone, and the chauffeur texts the curb and the plate before landing; meet and greet inside the hall is the add-on. The South Terminal across the airport handles the floatplanes and the small regional carriers to the islands and the interior, and the chauffeur meets you at its door. The YVR page has the full guide, and the Vancouver Airport Authority's own site at yvr.ca publishes the ground-transportation layout we describe.

Downtown, the North Shore and the suburbs

Downtown's peninsula holds the Financial District along Burrard and West Georgia, Coal Harbour and the convention centre on the water, Yaletown and Gastown for the restaurants, the West End and Stanley Park at the tip; a chauffeur's downtown day is a grid of one-way streets and a seawall. Kitsilano and Point Grey across the Burrard Bridge for UBC and the beaches; the North Shore - North and West Vancouver - across the Lions Gate or the Ironworkers for Capilano, Grouse and the executives' homes; Richmond for the airport hotels and the Asian food; Burnaby for Metrotown and SFU; New Westminster, Coquitlam and Surrey east along the river for the residential pickups. Every one of them prices on the engine, and the British Columbia page covers the rest of the province.

The port, the cruise ships and the film industry

Vancouver is the West Coast's cruise port and from May to September the Canada Place terminal turns over ships every few days: passengers arrive at YVR the day before, sleep downtown, board in the morning, and the reverse a week later. The terminal's pre-arranged pickup is on the Canada Place roof deck and the chauffeur knows the ship's schedule. The port itself and the shipping companies book the corporate account; the film industry - the largest production centre in Canada after Toronto, with the studios in Burnaby and on the North Shore - books hourly chauffeurs for talent and crew on the call sheet.

Venues and the calendar

Rogers Arena for the Canucks and the concerts, BC Place for the Whitecaps, the Lions and the stadium shows, the Vancouver Convention Centre's two buildings for the conferences, the Queen Elizabeth and the Orpheum for the arts, the Chan Centre at UBC. The calendar: the Sun Run in April, the Jazz Festival in June, the Celebration of Light fireworks on English Bay across two weeks in late July - the busiest evenings of the year for cars in the West End - the PNE fair in late August, the Vancouver International Film Festival in late September, and the ski season at Whistler from late November. The sporting events and nights out pages cover the pickup points.

Traffic, weather and the bridges

Vancouver's rush hours are about bridges. The Lions Gate runs a counterflow lane that changes direction morning and evening; the Ironworkers backs up to the Second Narrows; the Massey Tunnel to the south is a queue at 5 pm; the Port Mann carries the eastern suburbs. Rain is the weather - a hundred and sixty days a year - and it rarely stops anything, but the two or three snowfalls each winter stop everything because the city has no plows to speak of and the hills are steep. DriveBC is what dispatch reads; the honest figure is YVR to downtown in twenty-five minutes at 6 am and fifty at 5 pm.

Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky

The Sea-to-Sky Highway from Horseshoe Bay along Howe Sound through Squamish to Whistler is a hundred and twenty kilometres and two hours, and the airport-to-resort transfer in a Luxury SUV with the skis in the back is the booking Vancouver is known for. The highway closes for avalanche control after heavy snow and the chauffeur reads DriveBC before the pickup; the return on the Sunday with the flight number on the booking is where the tracking earns its keep. Priced as one fixed fare with the return built in on the city-to-city service. Victoria is the other direction - the ferry from Tsawwassen with the car aboard, or a chauffeur at each end - and the Victoria page covers it. Seattle is three hours south on the cross-border service via the Peace Arch.

What a limo costs in Vancouver

Fixed by the addresses and the vehicle class, shown before you book. YVR to downtown in an Executive Sedan is the most common booking; the North Shore and the eastern suburbs price by distance; Whistler is a single fixed fare each way. No surge on the cruise turnaround days or the fireworks nights, no meter, no gratuity added. Hourly bookings for the stretch and the Sprinter carry a minimum shown when you choose the hourly option. The fleet page has the capacities.

Weddings and the occasions

Stanley Park, the waterfront hotels, the UBC gardens and the Fraser Valley barns for the ceremony; the North Shore and the Whistler weekend for the destination wedding; the vineyards of the Okanagan a four-hour drive or a short flight to Kelowna. Prom season is June across Vancouver, Surrey and the valley. The wedding and prom pages cover the plans.

YVR arrival, worked through

A Tuesday 11 pm landing from Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, a family of five, six bags and a stroller. The Luxury SUV was booked a week earlier with the flight number and a booster seat noted; the aircraft is on time, CBSA at that hour takes twenty minutes, the bags twenty-five. At 10:45 the parents' phones receive the plate and the curb - the pre-arranged limousine area on the international arrivals level - and at 11:50 the whole family and everything they own are in one vehicle on the Arthur Laing Bridge, at the Yaletown apartment by 12:20. The sixty included minutes covered the hall; the fare was the one on the confirmation. The same booking from a domestic arrival - a Calgary flight at the domestic hall - would have had the chauffeur at the domestic curb with thirty minutes included, which at YVR is enough.

The North Shore and the ferries

North and West Vancouver are ten minutes from downtown at 2 pm and forty at 5 pm, because the Lions Gate Bridge's three lanes run a counterflow and the Ironworkers backs up to the Second Narrows; the chauffeur picks the bridge by the hour. The Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal in West Vancouver is the Sunshine Coast and Nanaimo boat; Tsawwassen to the south is the Victoria and Gulf Islands boat; both are pickup points in their own right and the Victoria page covers the crossing. Capilano and Grouse Mountain on the North Shore are the tourist day's second stop after Stanley Park.

Richmond, Surrey and the valley

Richmond around the airport holds the airport hotels, the Asian food that Vancouverites cross the bridge for, and the Olympic oval; Burnaby has Metrotown and the SFU campus on the mountain; New Westminster and Coquitlam the river towns; Surrey, the province's fastest-growing city, the South Asian weddings and the Peace Arch road to the border; Langley and Abbotsford the valley's farms and the airport at YXX. Every address prices on the engine, and a Surrey wedding weekend books the same way as a Vancouver one on the wedding page.

Hotels and the drop-off

The Fairmont Pacific Rim and the Pan Pacific at Canada Place, the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and the Rosewood Hotel Georgia on West Georgia, the Shangri-La and the Paradox on Georgia, the Fairmont Waterfront over the convention centre, the Opus in Yaletown, the Loden in Coal Harbour, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport inside YVR's terminal: the chauffeurs know each forecourt, and the travel desk books the room. The convention centre's shuttle curb is on Canada Place Way; the trade shows page covers the programme.

The film city

Vancouver's production industry - the studios in Burnaby, the North Shore and Langley, the locations across the city - books hourly chauffeurs by the week on the corporate account with the call sheet as the itinerary. Discretion is assumed and the chauffeurs sign the production's paperwork. Destination Vancouver's visitor guide has the tourist's list; the film office has the studio gates.

Three questions Vancouver visitors ask the desk

Is the drive from YVR to Whistler safe in winter? Yes, with the right vehicle and the right chauffeur: the Sea-to-Sky is a modern divided highway as far as Squamish and a well-maintained two-lane beyond it, the SUV runs winter tyres, and DriveBC's avalanche-control closures are read before every departure and again at Squamish. Can the chauffeur wait while we do the Capilano bridge? Yes; that is an hourly booking, and the North Shore's three big attractions - Capilano, Grouse and the Lynn Canyon bridge that costs nothing - are an afternoon with the car waiting at each. Do we need the SUV for two people with skis? Yes; a ski bag does not fit a sedan's trunk, and the SUV's fare difference is smaller than a second car's. The fleet page has the capacities and the British Columbia page the seasonal notes.

Cruise season, in detail

From May to September the Canada Place terminal turns around the Alaska ships on a rhythm the chauffeurs know by heart: disembarkation from 7 am with the taxi queue at its worst by 8, embarkation from noon with the road closures around the terminal by 1. A chauffeur booked for a 9 am disembarkation meets the passengers at the terminal's pre-arranged pickup on the roof deck and takes them to YVR for an afternoon flight, or to a downtown hotel for a night in the city, or to the Seattle cruise terminal at Pier 91 on the cross-border service for the ship that leaves from there. The Port of Vancouver publishes the ship schedule; the desk builds the day around it.
